| Moving Pictures, moving through time, it was a product of a changing society [the flâneur [5D]], which changed our perception of space and time. Will time be determining space in the future? This question is to me both relevant and interesting, since there is already a tendency to identify a place not by its physical location, but by its relations to other places expressed in travel time, e.g. shopping malls, public places, theme parks etc. Is movable architecture desirable? Probably technology
will create the possibilities to design and build it. Already designs
are made based upon animations, where the computer is used as a design-tool.
The product of this designing method is still just a static building,
since the movement [the animation] is only a tool. The building is not
capable of any movement at all, it can merely suggest certain dynamica.
So far nothing has really changed fundamentally, but what if the building
would actually become dynamic? What effect would this have upon the human
being, who requires some kind of static environment; at least that is
what is generally assumed. The dynamic, movable architecture is not only
present in future [utopian] views, there are examples where nowadays buildings
are able to change their locations, like movable [outdoor] swimming pools.
This however will not be discussed in this essay; I am interested in movable
architecture that is dynamic in a more fundamental way. Like a dwelling
that is able to change its form or location. Because the dwelling is the
most basic form of architecture that is possible, it is the elementary
form of architecture, the genesis. Without dwelling, no [other] architecture
is possible. And what would happen if this would be able to change over
time or to locate itself on different positions. To me this is far more
interesting than a movable swimming pool. Will our future home be like
a car [see Pict. 34.01] indifferent to its surrounding and entirely orientated
to [travel] time? What is the benefit of having a dwelling, which can
actually grow or adapt to our needs? The first part of this essay will
analyze philosophical pieces and try to make a statement about the nature
of dwelling and possible future development. This essay should be read
as a study with no predestined end or conclusion, it is not written to
make a already determined statement, it is a [re]search. |
